How I Started Apple
Like many other big successful companies, especially technology companies, Apple was started in a garage. Jobs was always interested in electronics and gadgets from an early age and while in high school, he took a bold step and called William Hewlett, co-founder of HP. From here, he met and befriended his namesake, Steve Wozniak. Wozniak had been trying to build a computer and Jobs convinced him to go into business with him.
They set up shop in the garage of Jobs’ parents and started working on the prototype of Apple I. Jobs sold his Volkswagen microbus and Wozniak sold his HP calculator.
The two refined their designs over time and by the time they launched Apple II, it was a tremendous success and ushered in the era of PCs.
Let me end the story here.
What lessons can we draw from this?
My main point of writing this article is to show how ideas and needs in the society are turned into products and businesses. This story is almost similar to that of Amazon, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Dell among others.
To have a company, there needs to be a need to be satisfied. Identify that need. Luckily, or maybe not so, there are very many needs in the society of today, especially Africa. During Jobs’ time, it was lack of PCs. What is it now?
The next step is crafting a solution. Think about what the perfect solution would look like. Seek a partner to assist you in this. Design a prototype, try it out, redesign until you are solving something.
Then get into the market and sell.

I believe that the bigger the problem the bigger the opportunity.
The good thing about the world of today is that there are many people, companies and books to learn from about starting your venture. You have role models and examples to look at, which will increase your chances of success.
